Blogging again, for the first time

Twelve years ago, I was encouraged by my boss, at the time, to start an ‘official’ blog. Up until that point, I’d had a web presence by running a personal web site which I’d developed with plain good old HTML, and by running an online Brazilian community called dotgospel.com. That was before Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Snapchat were a thing.

Over the years, I’ve had blogs which covered personal thoughts and opinions, blogs which documented some of my hobbies, and others which tried to capture some of my work with Open Source technologies. While I never stopped writing on my blogs, I also believe I got lost in the social media craze. Over time, my writings became shorter and shorter to the size of a tweet, and I believe even though a lot more eyes looked at the words I wrote, few actually read or understood what I had to say.

Fast forward to now, March 2017, and I am starting again. A new blog. The old is gone, deleted, emptied out the trash bin. Not only are my blogs gone, but also all of my social media accounts closed!

When I look back at my life, so far, I can definitely identify myself with the quote from American science-fiction writer Robert A. Heinlein which served as inspiration to naming this blog “Specialization is for insects.”

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

I am starting https://iamnotabug.blog/ because I have comforted the dying, I have taken orders, I also have give them. I have solved equations, I have programmed a computer, I have changed diapers, I have cooked, fought, written poetry and picked up feces. And I hope one day when my time comes I will leave this reality with most, if not all, of my wrongs right, gallantly, and dignified.
